KIEV, November 24 (Itar-Tass) — Ukraine had no principled intention to initial the Association Agreement with the European Union at the Ukraine-EU summit due to take place in Kiev on December 19, Ukrainian Deputy Foreign Minister Pavel Klimkin told journalists on Thursday.

“We had no principled intention to initial the agreement at the summit. Our idea is to declare about the completion of the talks,” Klimkin said. In his words, the Association Agreement may be initialled when the technical work on the document is completed.

At the same time, the deputy foreign minister declined to comment how much time it would take to complete this work. The initialling of the AA is a technical process, which envisages approving 1,500 pages by the Ukrainian and EU chief negotiators. Klimkin recalled that after the initialling of the document Europe needed five or six months to prepare the agreement for signing because it should be translated in 23 official languages of the European Union.

Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich said as of today only one point in the Association Agreement had to be coordinated – prospects for Ukraine’s membership in the EU.
