German top diplomat expects Russia to constructively chip in to solve Syrian crisis

According to Heiko Maas, the missile attack on Syria at least made it clear for all parties that not only an opportunity but also the need has arisen to launch a political process

BERLIN, April 16. /TASS/. Russia should make a constructive contribution to the search for a political solution to the Syria issue, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas told the ARD TV channel.

"Russia has become a difficult partner, and even more so recently, but we want to continue dialogue," he said. "However, the time has come to point out that we expect Russia to make a constructive contribution, particularly as far as the Syrian conflict is concerned," Maas added.

"Like it or not but the Syrian conflict cannot be resolved without Russia, so Russia should take part in the search for a solution," the German top diplomat noted.

According to Maas, the missile attack on Syria carried out by the United States, Great Britain and France "at least made it clear for all parties that not only an opportunity but also the need has arisen to launch a political process." "We are now searching for new ways to launch a peace process at the political level," he said while talking about the new format of talks on resolving the Syrian conflict that Berlin and Paris intended to launch. The German top diplomat noted that there was a need "to walk a new road because it cannot go on like this," as well as to build dialogue with countries capable of influencing important regional players.

Maas also said that on Sunday, London hosted a meeting of "high ranking representatives" from the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Germany, who discussed the situation in Syria.
