Afghanistan considers Russia and US its strategic partners

The Afghan foreign minister said that his country may become a platform for cooperation between countries in the region rather than for confrontation

TASHKENT, March 27. /TASS/. Russia and the United States are Afghanistan’s strategic partners, Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani said on Tuesday after an international conference on Afghanistan in the Uzbek capital city of Tashkent.

"The United States and Russia are Afghanistan’s strategic partners. Both countries want to see peace and stability in the republic," he said, adding that his country may become a platform for cooperation between countries in the region rather than for confrontation.

On Tuesday, Tashkent hosted an international high-level cooperation on Afghanistan, Peace Process, Security Cooperation and Regional Connectivity, that was attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Federica Mogherini, foreign ministers of Turkey, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and India, as well as US Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Thomas Shannon, deputy foreign ministers of China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, and UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Afghanistan Tadamichi Yamamoto.
