Syria welcomes UN’s role in future elections, calls for respecting people’s will — Assad

The Syrian president also pointed to differences between the Geneva talks and the Syrian National Dialogue Congress scheduled to be held in the Russia's Sochi

MOSCOW, December 18. /TASS/. The United Nations’ involvement in the future elections in Syria should be in line with international law and based on the respect for the Syrian people’s will, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad told reporters following talks with a Russian government delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin.

"We welcome the United Nations’ role, provided that Syria’s sovereignty remains intact," Assad said.

The Syrian president also pointed to differences between the Geneva talks and the Syrian National Dialogue Congress scheduled to be held in the Russian Black Sea resort of Sochi. According to Assad, everything depends on the participants. The Geneva talks involve some figures who neither represent the Syrian people nor have their own opinion, while during preparations for the Sochi congress, two fields of dialogue have been determined, which include constitutional issues and the future elections, Assad pointed out.
