Turkish, Palestinian leaders meet ahead of OIC summit to discuss Jerusalem issue

The status of Jerusalem is one of the key problems in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict

ANKARA, December 12./TASS/. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan met on Tuesday in Istanbul with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas ahead of an emergency summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) over the Jerusalem issue, the Sabah daily reports.

Talks were focused on Washington’s decision to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the key problems in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. Israel occupied its eastern part during the 1967 war. It insists that Jerusalem is the "eternal and indivisible" capital of Israel. Meanwhile, the Palestinians want to make the eastern part the capital city of their own state.

US President Donald Trump said in the White House on December 6 time was ripe for the official recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. He instructed the Department of State to start preparations for moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.
