BERLIN, December 11./TASS/. Russia is a force shaping the world order, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Monday citing the situation in Syria.

"We see Russia that wants to be a force shaping the world order and this is what it is if we take a look at Syria," the chancellor told a news conference in Berlin.

Speaking about the European Union, she said it should play a ‘geopolitical role’ which is of ‘major importance’. Merkel also stated the strengthening of China.

On December 6, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Islamic State (IS, terror group, outlawed in Russia) had been fully defeated on both banks of the Euphrates in Syria.

"Naturally, there can still be some isolated pockets of resistance. However, by and large, combat operations at this stage and on this territory are over. I repeat that they ended with the victory and terrorists’ complete defeat," the president stressed.

On Monday, the president visited the Russian Hmeymim airbase in Syria, ordering the Russian Defense Ministry to start the pullout of Russian troops from that country.
