Palestinian envoy hopeful US will change its decision on Jerusalem status

Abdel Hafiz Nofal believes that if the US doesn't adjust its position, the region will be on the brink of a disaster

MOSCOW, December 8. /TASS/. Palestine hopes that the US will adjust its stance on Jerusalem to prevent disastrous consequences, Palestinian Ambassador to Russia Abdel Hafiz Nofal said on Friday.

"I have a strong suspicion that the US can adjust its position, otherwise the region will be on the brink of a disaster," he said.

The diplomat also noted that during US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s visit to the Middle East, Palestine intends to express its dissatisfaction with Washington’s decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. "We are determined to express disagreement with this decision during Secretary of State Tillerson’s upcoming trip to the region," he said.

Speaking at the White House on Wednesday, US President Donald Trump stated that "it is time to officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel." He directed the Department of State to start making arrangements to move the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. The status of Jerusalem is one of the key issues of the Israeli-Palestinian crisis. Israel established control over the eastern part of the city during the 1967 conflict. It insists that Jerusalem is its single and indivisible capital, while the Palestinians want to make the eastern part of the city the capital of their state.
