Afghan lawmaker calls on global community to help Kabul fight drug threat

A lawmaker says Afghanistan needs assistance in its fight against the drug threat

MOSCOW, December 4. /TASS/. Afghanistan will need the assistance of all the interested countries in its fight against the drug threat, Second Deputy Speaker of the lower house of Afghanistan’s parliament Mohammad Nazir Ahmadzai said at the Parliamentarians Against Drugs international conference on Monday.

"Years of wars, the lack of security and economic stagnation are the reasons why Afghanistan is now considered to be the largest manufacturer of drugs," he said.

According to the Afghan lawmaker, drug crops are cultivated in areas controlled by terror groups and the Taliban, from there drugs are smuggled to other countries of Central Asia and Iran, while in areas controlled by the government drug cultivation is prohibited.

"Since drugs are a global issue, an effective fight against the drug threat requires active efforts by all the interested states," Ahmadzai said. "I urge all to assist Afghanistan in this fight," he added.
