Assad’s fate not raised at Geneva talks — UN mediator

The eighth round of the intra-Syrian consultations is currently under way in Geneva

GENEVA, December 1. /TASS/. The future of incumbent Syrian President Bashar Assad was not discussed during the eighth round of the intra-Syrian consultations in Geneva, the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura told reporters on Thursday.

"We have not discussed the issue of presidency, we have been discussing the 12 principles - and you will see they are of a broad nature and they have an impact on everything, and the future constitution," he said. "So that issue has not even come up."

"I want to believe that this issue should come up with the Syrians through UN-supervised elections, according to [UN Security Council Resolution] 2254," the UN mediator added.
