Helicopter accident rate up 50% in past three years - IAC

2016 showed the highest incident rate for helicopters since 2012

MOSCOW, March 15. /TASS/. The number of incidents and disasters involving helicopters increased by 50% in the past three years, the Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC) said in an annual report published on its website.

"2016 showed the highest incident rate for helicopters since 2012," the committee said.

According to the IAC, comprising 11 former Soviet states, a total of 12 air incidents involving helicopters occurred in its member countries, compared to 11 in 2015. The figure includes three air disasters.

Only one of those 12 incidents was caused by a presumed technical malfunction, the rest were due to pilot errors, weather conditions or poor flight training of the crew.

Last year’s worst helicopter disaster occurred on October 21. The Mi-8 helicopter crashed in Russia’s Yamal, killing 19 out of the 22 people on board.
