UN Syria envoy notes progress towards single opposition delegation

"We have been supporting and facilitating a lot of dialogue and contacts among the invitees on this matter", UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said

GENEVA, March 4. /TASS/. The fourth round of intra-Syrian proximity talks in Geneva has yielded certain progress in what concerns forming a single opposition delegation, United Nations Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura said on Friday.

"We believe there was progress made this round towards the base or the need for a base of a single opposition delegation to participate in negotiations with the government of Syria," he said. "We have been supporting and facilitating a lot of dialogue and contacts among the invitees on this matter and that is continued until today."

"We will continue definitely encouraging these efforts in this direction and work for facilitating efforts so that in the context of Resolution 2254 the various parties will be able to come with some common umbrella or understanding of what is their common position. And there are common positions," he stressed.

However he did not give a direct answer to a TASS question about possible participation of the Kurds and the Hmeymim platform of the opposition in the next round of talks. He said instead that those who want to be part of the process must come under one umbrella.
