Moldova’s government recalls ambassador to Russia

The decision to recall Moldovan ambassador to Russia Dmitry Braghis came as a surprise for Moscow

CHISINAU, March 1. /TASS/. The Moldovan government is recalling Ambassador to Russia, Dmitry Braghis, who was also the head of the country’s diplomatic mission in Tajikistan. A decision on the issue was made at a Cabinet meeting earlier in the day.

The draft decision was presented by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, Daniela Morari, who provided no explanation for recalling the diplomat. The press service of Moldova’s Foreign Ministry refused to comment on the proposed move either. According to local legislation, the decision should be endorsed by Moldovan President Igor Dodon.

Braghis served as Moldova’s Ambassador to Russia and Tajikistan since November 27, 2015, and headed the government from 1999 to 2001 under President Petru Lucinschi.

The decision came as a surprise for the Russian Foreign Ministry, the reasons behind such actions are unclear, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin told TASS on Wednesday.

"The news was somewhat unexpected," he said. "Perhaps, questions about the reasons for such decisions should be addressed to Chisinau."

"He took part in all negotiations and meetings of the intergovernmental commission. We cooperated actively through the Foreign Ministries," the high-ranking diplomat said. "He enjoyed respect and was an authoritative member of the ambassadorial corps in Moscow."
