Syrian opposition’s Cairo group to meet with Russian diplomats on March 1

Jihad Makdissi, a Cairo platform leader, said he planned to meet with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov

GENEVA, February 28. /TASS/. The Cairo platform of the Syrian opposition plans to meet with two Russian senior foreign ministry officials on March 1, Jihad Makdissi, a Cairo platform leader, told TASS on Tuesday.

He said he plans to meet with Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Gennady Gatilov and director of the Russian foreign ministry’s Middle East and North Africa department Sergei Vershinin to discuss ways to push the negotiating process.

"I met yesterday with another high level Russian diplomat, and tomorrow I am meeting Mr Gatilov and Mr Vershinin," he said.

"The meeting was excellent and we discussed a few ideas that would push the diplomatic process forward if applied," he said. "This meeting served also to hear from the Russian senior diplomat his view and assessment of the recent geopolitical developments. We both agreed that ending the war is the priority and 2254 is the main reference for the negotiation process."

Earlier in the day, Gatilov told journalists he had met Damascus’ chief negotiator Bashar al-Jaafari and planned to hold consultations with the opposition High Negotiations Council (NHC) on Wednesday.
