Diplomat says new Astana meeting on Syria possible

Kazakhstan was always ready to provide a platform for international meetings on solving the Syrian crisis, Kazakh deputy foreign minister has vowed

ASTANA, February 28. /TASS/. Kazakhstan is ready to host another technical meeting on settling the Syrian crisis, should the need for such a meeting arise, Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi said on Tuesday.

"We are waiting for some information. Nothing can be said for sure yet, the Geneva talks on Syria are underway. Depending on their progress, the need for technical meetings will be assessed," he said. According to the Kazakh diplomat, after the Geneva talks conclude, it will become clear "what issues should be discussed at technical meetings, whether it will be the ceasefire or compliance with the guarantees."

At the same time, Tleuberdi stressed that Kazakhstan was always ready to provide a platform for international meetings on solving the Syrian crisis. "Our task is to host negotiations. An important thing is that participants in talks receive specific security guarantees when they come here," the Kazakh deputy foreign minister said.
