Senior US lawmaker praises Mattis nomination as defense secretary

Marine Gen. James Mattis retired 2013 after leading the military’s Central Command

WASHINGTON, December 2. /TASS/. The nomination of retired Marine Gen. James Mattis to the post of the secretary of defense is an "excellent selection," House of Representatives Armed Services Committee Chairman Mac Thornberry told TASS.

"Few individuals in the field of national security are as respected and admired as Jim Mattis. His nomination as Secretary of Defense is an excellent selection, and I am grateful for his willingness to serve in this capacity," he said.

Presidential nominees are to be approved by the Senate.

"I will work with my colleagues in the coming days to clear the way for his confirmation by the Senate," Thornberry said.

Mattis retired 2013 after leading the military’s Central Command. Before taking the post, he will have to bypass a federal law under which defense secretaries must not have been on active duty in the previous seven years.
