Moscow, Minsk seek to join efforts to fight distortion of history

According to Belarusian top diplomat Vladimir Makei, the attempts to reconsider history have become "regular and dangerous" over the past decades

MINSK, November 22. /TASS/. Minsk and Moscow should combat attempts to falsify history together, Belarusian top diplomat Vladimir Makei said at a joint session of the two countries’ foreign ministries.

"Over the past decades, attempts to reconsider history at the bidding of imaginary winners’ have become regular and dangerous," the Belarusian foreign minister said. According to him, "combating such attempts together is our duty to our descendants."

Russia’s top diplomat, Sergey Lavrov, in turn, pointed out attempts to drive wedges between Russia and Belarus by falsifying the history of the World War II.

"The Russian and Belarusian foreign ministries have been paying much attention to combating the distortion of history including attempts to review the outcome of the World War II," Lavrov stressed. "Today we are witnessing nefarious efforts to drive wedges between our fraternal peoples and diminish our role in the defeat of Nazism."

The Russian foreign minister noted that to succeed in combating such activities "Russian and Belarusian historians need to boost cooperation including work in archives."

Combating the falsification of history ranks as one of the main topics of the Russian and Belarusian foreign ministries’ joint session.
