OSCE official asks Russia to give detailed info on Ukrainian journalist’s detention

Ukrinform said Sushchenko, the agency’s correspondent in France was visiting Moscow for private reasons while on vacation

VIENNA, October 4. /TASS/. OSCE representative for freedom of the media, Dunja Mijatovic has asked Russia to provide information on the arrest of Ukrainian journalist Roman Sushchenko, a correspondent for Ukrinform news agency, who was detained on suspicions of espionage.

"I am working on this case, this morning I addressed Russian authorities seeking more information and requesting release," Mijatovic twittered.

In the meantime, a spokesman for the public relations center of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said earlier on Monday Sushchenko was detained in Moscow during an activity related to espionage. He had been gathering data on the Russian Armed Forces and the Russian National Guard, the leaking of which abroad might inflict damage on Russia’s defense capability.

A criminal case citing espionage was instituted against the man and the Lefortovo district court authorized his arrest until November 30.

Ukrinform said Sushchenko, the agency’s correspondent in France was visiting Moscow for private reasons while on vacation.
