BAKU, August 23 /TASS/ Azerbaijan has asked Turkey to help uncover links and sources of funding for the supporters of Fethullah Gulen, the US-based Turkish cleric accused of organizing the aborted coup in Turkey, Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs, the General Prosecutor’s Office and the State Security Service announced in a joint statement on Tuesday.
"In compliance with the European Convention, a petition was forwarded to the Turkish General Prosecutor to launch an investigation to identify the connections between Hizmet movement members operating in Azerbaijan and its supporters abroad, particularly in Turkey", the statement read.
Baku’s intelligence services earlier apprehended a group of the Azerbaijani citizens allegedly connected to Gulen’s movement. The assistant to the chairman of the opposition People’s Front Party Faig Amirov is among those in custody. Azerbaijan’s General Prosecutor’s Office announced that a criminal case was initiated against the supporters of Gulen’s movement operating there.
The Deputy Head of Azerbaijan’s Presidential Administration Novruz Mamedov proclaimed that "all the FETO (Fethullah Gulen’s organization) supporters in Azerbaijan will be identified".
