Russia, Iran, Azerbaijan to jointly deal with North-South transport project - Aliyev

"This year we’ve taken a decision that Azerbaijan will construct a railroad to Iran’s border. Hopefully, we’ll do it within the nearest months," he said

BAKU, August 8. /TASS/. Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is confident that the cooperation between the country with Russia and Iran in the transport sector is very promising.

"Azerbaijan is the only country in the world that has borders both with Iran and Russia. There are railway links between Russia and Azerbaijan. This year we’ve taken a decision that Azerbaijan will construct a railroad to Iran’s border. Hopefully, we’ll do it within the nearest months," he said at a meeting with leaders of the countries in Baku on Monday.

According to Aliyev, the partners has set the foundation of a railroad bridge above the Astara River on the border between Azerbaijan and Iran. "Those infrastructure projects are part and parcel of the North-South transport corridor," which is going to become "a transnational project of strategic importance," he said, adding that "the corridor is very profitable from the viewpoint of transportation of transit cargoes.".
