US embassy offers condolences to Russia over death of children in Karelia

Thirteen children on a summer camp drowned when their boats capsized during a storm on Lake Syamozero in Karelia on Saturday

MOSCOW, June 20. /TASS/. The US Embassy in Russia has expressed condolences over the tragedy on a lake in northern Russia’s Karelia region in which at least 13 children have died.

"Our thoughts, condolences and prayers are with the near and dear ones of those who died in Karelia," spokesman for the embassy William Stevens wrote in the Russian language in his Twitter microblog on Monday.

Thirteen children on a summer camp drowned when their boats capsized during a storm on Lake Syamozero in Karelia on Saturday. A search for another child is underway. Russia’s Investigative Committee has opened a criminal case into the death of children.
