Two persons wounded in shootout in southern Kazakhstan — police

ASTANA, June 19. /TASS/. One policeman and one civilian were wounded in a shootout in the city of Taraz in southern Kazakhstan, a spokesman for the local interior department said on Sunday.

According to the spokesman, the incident took place when the police stopped an unidentified man to check his identities. The man opened fire from handgun at the policeman who wounded him during the detention.

Both men were taken to hospital. According to the police, the detainee has had a previous police record. However, according to the police, he "is not a religious extremist."

An investigation is underway, the spokesman added.
