Syrian ambassador urges UN to fulfill its counter-terrorism tasks

The ambassador calls for blocking the channels of financial and military support to the militants that move via the Syrian-Turkish border

MOSCOW, June 9 /TASS/. The world community should meet the commitments it has undertaken to preserve international security, Syrian Ambassador to Russia Riyad Haddad said in a speech at a session of the inter-factional deputy group for the protection of Christian values held at the Russian State Duma on Thursday.

"A terrorist war unleashed against Syria is directed against all layers of Syrian society, including Christians who are the citizens of Syria," Haddad said.

"The international community has realized the importance of the Syrian Arab Army role in the struggle against terrorism. The Syrian army today is the guarantor of security in the region and worldwide," the Syrian diplomat said.

"It is necessary for the countries of the world to put the ideals of humanism above political and economic interests," the ambassador said. "They should adopt necessary measures against those countries, which send terrorists to Syria, finance their terrorist activities and supply them with weapons," Haddad said.

"The aforesaid activities have backlashed with terror in these countries. They got what they had fought for," the Syrian ambassador went on to say. Once again, he called for blocking the channels of financial and military support to the militants that move via the Syrian-Turkish border.
