TEHRAN, June 6. /TASS/. Iran is ready to render assistance in the settlement of the conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh and the resolution of the border crisis between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani said on Monday at a meeting with visiting Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian.

"Iran urges the parties for show calm and restraint. The Nagorno-Karabakh problem should be resolved by political means, at the negotiating table. The escalation of the conflict will create a serious threat to national interests of all countries in the region. Iran believes it is necessary to do everything possible to prevent such a scenario," Shamkhani said.

He voiced the conviction that the region needs to develop all-round cooperation in such areas as energy, agriculture, transport and transit traffic.

Edward Nalbandian is paying a two-day visit to Tehran. He earlier met with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, speaker of the Majlis (Iranian parliament) Ali Larijani and his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif. During the visit the two sides signed an agreement on simplification of visa regime.
