Four militants have been killed in Dagestan, including two ringleaders - of the Gunib and Makhachkala gangs that are also involved in bombing a motor convoy with the Interior Ministry servicemen, the Information Center of the Russian National Antiterrorism Committee (NAC) told TASS on Thursday.

"The further search and investigative actions continue", a NAC representative said.

According to him, officers of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) during an operation conducted in in forested mountainous terrain Dagestan’s Gunib district overnight found federally wanted Akhmed Shamkhalov, born in 1991, the leader of the so-called Gunib gang, which committed numerous terrorist crimes. "In response to the authorities’ demands to lay down arms and surrender, the bandit offered armed resistance and was neutralized in a brief exchange of fire." According to NAC, the militant was armed with an assault rifle, a pistol and ammunition.

There have been no casualties among civilians and losses among the security forces there. "As a result of the counter-terrorist operation conducted in the Leninkent village of the Kirovsky district of Makhachkala yesterday, three bandits, including ringleader of the Makhachkala gang Kamil Magomedov, born in 1986, were neutralized," NAC reported. It has been established that this gang committed numerous attempts on the lives of law enforcement officers and armed assaults on the civilian population, including the explosion of a motor convoy with the Russian Interior Ministry servicemen in March this year.

FSB bomb disposal experts have been working at the scene.
