Two Russian cargo aircraft deliver 50 tonnes of humanitarian cargoes to Syrian airbase

LATAKIA, February 11. /TASS/. Two Russian cargo aircraft Ilyushin Il-76 of Aerospace Force landed on Thursday morning at Syria’s Hmeimim airbase, carrying 50 tonnes of humanitarian aid aboard.

Syrians besieged by terrorists in their home localities will receive the humanitarian aid airlifted from Moscow which contains foodstuffs and medicines along with clothing, school items and sweets and toys for children.

Earlier, Syria’s military transport aircraft dropped another batch of joint Russian-Syrian humanitarian aid to Deir ez-Zor, the largest city in the country’s north-east. The 50-tonne cargo was dropped on Russian P-7 parachute platforms from an altitude of 4,000 meters.

According to UN statistics, fighting between Syrian government troops and militants has killed over 220,000 people and displaced millions since its start in 2011. Gangs of militants making part of various armed formations, the most active of them being the Islamic State and Jabhat al-Nusra terrorist organizations, fight government troops.

Russia’s aviation grouping has been delivering air strikes against the Islamic State terrorist organization in Syria since September 30 at the request of Syria’s President Bashar Assad.

From November 17, the Russian aviation grouping in Syria switched to delivering massive strikes against militants, including with the involvement of strategic bombers. As the Russian Defense Ministry reported, Russia’s air grouping has focused on destroying terrorist-controlled oil extraction, storage, transportation and refining facilities.

Since 2014, the US-led coalition has also been delivering air strikes against militants in Syria and Iraq. Moscow and Washington are exchanging data on sorties but close coordination has not been achieved so far.

Meanwhile, the West accuses Russia of bombing so-called moderate opposition, rather than terrorists’ facilities. Russia’s Defense Ministry rejects the allegations as unfounded.
