NEW YORK, February 9. /TASS/. Fifty-nine shark attacks out of world’s total 98 occurred in the United States last year, Florida Museum of Natural History said on Tuesday.
The number of shark attacks broke a new record in 2015 while the previous biggest number of shark attacks was registered in 2000 - 88 cases. Last year eighteen cases were registered in Australia and eight in South Africa.
Six people died in last year’s shark attacks. Two cases were registered on the French Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean, and one in each Australia, Egypt, New Caledonia and US.
In the United States, the majority of shark attacks was registered in the southern state of Florida - 30 cases, followed by North and South Carolina (16 cases), Hawaii (seven cases), California (two cases) and Texas (two cases). One case was registered in each New York and Mississippi.
Experts say the number of shark attacks will grow in the future as their population continues to increase.
