MINSK, December 31. /TASS/. Belarusian police detained on Wednesday a Russian citizen with a residence permit in the country who kept weapons and ammunition, chief of the Belarusian main police department for fighting organised crime and corruption Viktor Shapolav said on Thursday.

"The detained kept in a stash in an underground parking at his place of residence in a Minsk district an AK-74 Kalashnikov assault rifle, 152 cartridges, optical sights and silencers," he said.

According to Shapoval, the Russian citizen owns expensive cars. "Neither he nor his wife are officially employed in Belarus. His income sources cause suspicion and are now being checked," the police official said.

Criminal proceedings have been instituted against the detained Russian citizen under the Criminal Code article "illegal possession of firearms, ammunition and explosive substances," the Belarusian Interior Ministry said.
