Vietnam backs Russia’s greater role on world arena — FM

HANOI, December 28. /TASS/. Vietnam supports the strengthening of Russia’s role on the global arena, the country’s Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh said in an interview with TASS on Monday.

"Vietnam stands for Russia's continuing decisively strengthening its role as a major world power that makes a responsible contribution towards maintaining peace and security and ensuring development in the region and the whole world," Minh said.

He said the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, the Soviet campaign against Nazi Germany, was one of the major events of the outgoing year.

"The people of Vietnam and Russia are very close to each other by spirit and have much common in the history of the two countries - the heroic fight to save and defend the Motherland," Minh said.

"May 9 will remain in the human history forever as the Day of Great Victory of the Soviet Red Army thanks to which the world was saved from fascism, the Second World War was over and peace returned to the Earth," he said.

The visit of Vietnam's President Truong Tan Sang to Moscow this May was a remarkable event of the year in the relations between Vietnam and Russia, the top diplomat said.

During the visit, Vietnam’s leader participated together with Russian President Vladimir Putin in the celebrations of the 70th anniversary of the Great Victory on Moscow’s Red Square.

To ensure the further development of the all-encompassing strategic partnership between Hanoi and Moscow based on high political trust, the sides need to focus on advancing cooperation in the key areas: trade and investments, energy and military and technical sphere, Minh said.
