Syria terminates agreement on visa-free regime with Turkey — foreign ministry

This step was made in response to the actions of Ankara which announced the cancellation of visa-free regime for Syrian citizens on the border on December 9, the statement says

BEIRUT, December 17. /TASS/. Syria has terminated the agreement on visa-free regime with Turkey which was made between the neighboring countries in 2009, SANA news agency quoted the Syrian Foreign Ministry’s statement as saying on Thursday.

"This step was made in response to the actions of Ankara which announced the cancellation of visa-free regime for Syrian citizens on the border on December 9," the statement said.

"The government of the Syrian Arab Republic is committed to the principle of national sovereignty and, as a reciprocal measure, banned Turkish citizens from entering the country without a visa," the Syrian Foreign Ministry said. The statement stressed that "Syria places all responsibility for such step and its effect on the relations between the Syrian and Turkish peoples on the government of Turkey."
