Rouhani: Russia, Iran agree that antiterrorism efforts are priority in Syria

Iranian President criticized the West for its position that Syrian President Bashar Assad should leave his post

UNITED NATIONS, September 28. /TASS/. The positions of Russia and Iran on Syria are "practically compatible" as both countries agree that the fight against terrorism is a priority, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said Sunday speaking at a meeting in New York.

"Iran and the Russian side have nearly compatible views as they are both aimed at the fight against terrorism," Rouhani said.

He criticized the West for its position that Syrian President Bashar Assad should leave his post saying that if the Syrian government fails then the Islamic State (IS) terrorist organization will "enter Damascus" and the country will "become a refuge for terrorists.".
