Romano Prodi: Settlement in Syria may be only after concord between Russia, US

ROME, September 13. /TASS/. Approaching settlement of the conflict in Syria may be only if Russia and the US find a compromise, former Head of the European Commission and former Prime Minister of Italy Romano Prodi said in an interview with Messaggero published on Sunday.

"The only opportunity [for the Syrian settlement] is a compromise between two super nations [Russia and the US], where it would be possible to continue a joint war against terrorism and caliphate, as well as to prepare in reasonable terms the transfer of power from [Syria’s President Bashar] Assad," Prodi said.

He said about similar, in his opinion, events in Iraq and Libya, which have demonstrated overturning the authority regimes without ready scenarios for future causes enormous tragedies.

"I have been saying it is impossible to defeat terrorism without a concord between two super nations [Russia and the US] under all the problems on the way to this concord," he said.
