Ukrainian Defense Ministry requests $4 bln spending for 2016

The Defense Ministry has been increasing the budget for the second consecutive year, from about $909,000 in 2014 to $1.8 billion in 2015

KIEV, September 1. /TASS/. The Ukrainian Defense Ministry has requested the government to set aside 86.9 million hryvnias ($4 billion) for defense needs in the 2016 budget, the ministry’s press office said on Tuesday.

The ministry plans to spend the money on "increasing the combat readiness of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and providing sufficient financing for the governmental targeted defense programs of developing armaments and combat hardware and housing construction," the press office said.

The Defense Ministry has been increasing the budget for the second consecutive year, from about 20 billion hryvnias ($909,000) in 2014 to 39.4 billion ($1.8 billion) in 2015. If the request for defense spending in 2016 is met, the Defense Ministry’s budget will quadruple over the past two years.
