Russian deputy FM says Moscow wants Korean peninsula to be region of peace and cooperation

MOSCOW, August 12 /TASS/. Implementation of joint projects by Russia, DPRK (North Korea) and South Korea will become a vital factor of stability in Northeast Asia, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov, said in his speech at a reception given at the North Korean embassy in Moscow on Wednesday on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese militarists.

"We remember the heroic feat of Soviet and Korean servicemen who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of Korea. The price of victory over Japanese militarists was high," Morgulov said.

"Our peoples are linked by good-neighbourliness and cooperation. Symbolically, we are holding the Cross Year of friendship this year," the Russian diplomat went on to say.

"The results of contacts at all levels show that there is a potential for developing cooperation. We should do our best to unlock this potential," Morgulov stressed.

The high-ranking diplomat noted joint projects in trade and economic spheres and in the field of investments.

"The implementation of bilateral as well as trilateral projects involving South Korea will become a vital factor of stability in Northeast Asia. We want the Korean peninsula to be a region of peace and cooperation and we will contribute to achieving this goal," Morgulov concluded.

North Korean Ambassador to Moscow Kim Hyun Joong said in turn that the North Korean leadership was determined to develop and strengthen bilateral relations of friendship with Russia that passes on from generation to generation.

"Active interaction in all spheres is under way. Further cooperation will contribute to strengthening security in Northeast Asia," the North Korean ambassador said.

"Kim Jong-un esteems the traditions of Russian-Korean friendship laid down by his predecessors. We are going to pay attention to developing these relations," Kim Hyun Joong said.

He thanked the Russian side for holding a North Korean flower exhibition in Moscow. "We hope the exhibition will pass well," the North Korean diplomat said.
