UNITED NATIONS, August 12. /TASS/. The UN Secretariat has temporarily suspended consideration of plans on establishing an office in Ukraine for supporting the peaceful settlement of the conflict in the country’s east, the press service has said.
The international organization has decided to give up the idea as it has not secured the solid support of all the parties concerned, UN spokesperson Eri Kaneko told TASS.
In May, Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said the office, which is set to contribute to implementation of the Minsk peace agreements, would be opened in the country in the near future.
Over the past months, some UN member-states have called on the Secretariat to take more active steps to support the effort on the peaceful settlement in war-torn Ukraine.
UN chief Ban Ki-moon ordered the Secretariat to continue providing this support based on particular requests of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE).
