Top diplomats of Russia, Turkey discuss situation in Syria, ways to counter Islamic State

MOSCOW, August 5. /TASS/. Foreign Ministers of Russia and Turkey Sergey Lavrov and Mevlut Cavusoglu have held a meeting on Wednesday on the sidelines of the meeting of the top diplomats of the ASEAN member-countries in Kuala Lumpur. The two sides discussed the situation in Syria and "the ways to increase the effectiveness of combating the so-called Islamic State (IS)," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

Lavrov and Cavusoglu also "exchanged views on the key issues of developing the bilateral relations, including in the context of preparation for the 6th meeting of the Russian-Turkish High-Level Cooperation Council," the ministry said.

The ASEAN events are held in Malaysia on August 5 and August 6. During his trip to Kuala Lumpur the Russian foreign minister will take part in the Russia-ASEAN ministerial round, in the work of the top diplomats of the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN regional security forum.
