WWII shells found in Germany, over 16,000 people evacuated

Traffic was closed along a highway connecting Berlin and Dortmund

BERLIN, July 19. /TASS/. About 16,000 people have been evacuated from districts around Hannover and Langenhagen next to it as three shells left from the times of World War II will be defused, local authorities said on Sunday.

The evacuation began at 09 a.m. local time.

Traffic was closed along a highway connecting Berlin and Dortmund.

The shells were found during a drilling several days earlier. Sappers will have to check whether they still have the detonators.

If the operation is successful, the local residents will be able to return home later, on Sunday afternoon.
