BEIJING, June 24. /TASS/. The number of officially registered drug addicts in China reaches 2.95 million, but the actual figure is more than 14 million, the country’s assistant minister of public security told a news conference on Wednesday.

At least one out of a hundred Chinese citizens uses drugs, Liu Yuejin said.

Although China’s authorities have managed to limit the spread of the so-called "hard" drugs, such a heroin, the number of Chinese citizens using synthetic drugs has grown to 1.46 million, according to official statistics. This is a six-fold increase from the 2008 mark.

Out of 480,000 drug addicts registered for the first time in 2014, 29,000 are under 18 years of age, and three quarters are younger than 35.

Last year, police detained 169,000 people on suspicion of links to drug business and using drugs.

In China, possession of 50 grams or more of drugs may result in death penalty.
