MOSCOW, June 3. /TASS/. A man died and a woman was wounded when Ukrainian government forces shelled the eastern city of Yenakiyevo overnight into Wednesday, officials say.
Vladimir Samokhvalov, in charge of city recovery work, said overnight shelling also destroyed many buildings in the inner suburbs.
The fresh casualties were announced as forces loyal to Kiev intensified military action against militias in east Ukraine’s self-proclaimed Donetsk republic, violating ceasefire agreements reached in the Belarusian capital, Minsk, in February.
Over the past 24 hours, the current ceasefire in Ukraine’s east has been violated by Kiev forces some 43 times, a Defense Ministry spokesman for the self-proclaimed republic said on Wednesday.
Various weapons are said to have been used by Kiev forces to shell residential areas and suburbs, the spokesman said, according to a Donetsk News Agency report.
Territory was attacked 32 times by mortars, four times by tanks and six times by armoured personnel carriers and infantry vehicles, the spokesman said. Grenade launchers and small arms had also opened fire.
Shelling has been recorded near the cities of Donetsk, Gorlovka, Yenakiyevo, Dokuchayevsk and Debaltsevo, as well as the settlements of Tavricheskoye, Lukovo, Novaya Maryevka, Shirokino, Sakhanka, Spartak, Kalinovka, Zhabichevo, Shirokaya Balka and Yasnoye, the official added.
According to the self-proclaimed republic’s defense ministry, Ukrainian government forces have further intensified military action against local militias, also violating Minsk ceasefire agreements.
