DPR defence ministry: Ukrainian troops use heavy artillery in shelling of Donetsk airport

The Ukrainian troops and the self-defense forces of the self-proclaimed People’s Republics have repeatedly accused each other of violating ceasefire and other provisions of the Minsk agreements

MOSCOW, May 17. /TASS/. Ukrainian troops used heavy artillery while shelling the Donetsk airport, Eduard Basurin, a spokesman for the defence ministry of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), said on Sunday.

"Ukrainian armed forces again used heavy artillery of 152 mm caliber in the area of the Donetsk airport. The areas of Shirokino and Gorlovka were shelled from tanks and 120mm and 82 mm caliber mortars," the Donetsk News Agency quoted him as saying.

Basurin said that over the past 24 hours the DPR defence ministry had registered 27 episodes of ceasefire violations by the Ukrainian side. "One DPR servicemen was killed and one more wounded," he said.

Ceasefire in eastern Ukraine is one of the key provisions of the Minsk agreements on the Ukrainian settlement. Other provisions include heavy weaponry withdrawal, prisoner exchange, local elections in Donbass and a constitutional reform in Ukraine.

The Minsk accords were signed on February 12, after 14-hour negotiations between the leaders of Normandy Four (Russian President Vladimir Putin, French President Francois Hollande, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Ukrainian President Pyotr Poroshenko) in the Belarusian capital city of Minsk. Concurrently, Minsk hosted a meeting of the Contact Group on Ukrainian settlement.
