Human Rights Council notes worsening human rights record in US

GENEVA, May 11. /TASS/. Russia and some other countries from the UN Human Rights Council drew attention on Monday to growing racism, xenophobia and police abuse in the United States.

"We state that the situation with human rights in the country has seriously worsened over the recent years," said Russia’s representative Alexey Goltyaev within the framework of the Human Rights Council’s Universal Periodic Review, reviewing the human rights records of the United States.

Russia and some other countries among the 47 states of the UN Human Rights Council mentioned incidents in Fergusson, Baltimore and some other cities, where the authorities often quell mass protests with the use of military force. It was also marked that despite its pledges, Washington has not closed as of yet its Guantanamo Bay detention camp, where dozens of inmates are held without charge or trial.

Those making reports criticized methods used by US secret services to secretly collect, process and use personal information, including abroad. They stated that the US is not in a hurry to join founding international agreements in the sphere of human rights, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Russian envoy expressed regrets over US disregarding recommendations received during the previous Universal Periodic Review and urged the US "to take urgent measures to remedy the situation".
