BEIJING, May 6. /TASS/. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has called on the European Union to defend the fundamental role the United Nations can play in international affairs, the foreign ministry said on Wednesday.

Wang told EU foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini at a meeting in the Chinese capital marking the 40th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations between Beijing and Brussels: "China and the European Union should work together to preserve peace, safeguard the outcomes of World War II and support the UN’s fundamental role in the system of international relations," according to a statement on the foreign ministry's website.

Wang noted that Beijing and Brussels should "continue in their combined efforts to try to achieve four great objectives of their partner relationships: peaceful coexistence, development, reforms and cultural exchange".

The Chinese statement cited Mogherini as saying that the EU and China shared many common interests, noting "the strategic nature" of cooperation between the two sides.

Mogherini stressed that friendship between the EU and China had become stronger over the past 40 years. She noted also that Brussels wanted together with Beijing to strengthen the UN’s role in resolving global and regional problems.
