MOSCOW, May 5. /TASS/. The village of Sakhanka in the Novoazovsk Region of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) is currently being shelled by the Ukrainian army from the direction of the city of Mariupol, village administration head Alexander Pelipas said Tuesday.

"We have come under two salvos from the direction of Mariupol; shells fell two meters from each other at a yard, a gas pipe was damaged," Pelipas was quoted as saying by the Donetsk News Agency.

Earlier Tuesday, the DPR Defense Ministry reported that the Ukrainian army violated the "silence regime" in Donbas 40 times over the past 24 hours.

"The inhabited localities of Shirokino, Sakhanka and Gorlovka came under the most intensive artillery, mortar and tank fire. Twenty 152-mm artillery shells exploded, tanks made 36 shots and 120-mm and 82-mm mortars delivered 90 shots," the ministry said.

It said the situation in the DPR remains complicated.

According to a 2001 census, Sakhanka had a population of 1,093.
