MOSCOW, May 3. /TASS/. One militiaman was killed and seven civilians were wounded in shelling of the territory of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) by Ukrainian troops in the past 24 hours, Eduard Basurin, spokesman for the DPR defence ministry, said on Sunday.

"Casualties among DPR troops include one militiaman killed. Seven civilians were wounded: fibe men in the settlement of Yasinovataya and two women in Donetsk’s Kievsky district," he said, adding that there had been reported 36 episodes of shelling against the territory of the republic. "Most intensive shelling was reported from the area around the Donetsk airport, the Kievsky district of Donetsk, the settlements of Novaya Maryevka and Grigorovka," he said.

According to earlier reports, Donetsk’s Kievsky district came under dense artillery shelling from the positions of Ukrainian troops in Opytnoye and Avdeyevka overnight from May 2 to May 3. About a hundred shells hit the area damaging about 20 apartment houses and a school building. Representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) and journalists inspected the area that had come under shelling.

"We are examining the type of Ukrainian munitions that exploded in Donetsk overnight to Sunday. We will announce the results by the evening on May 4," he said.

Earlier, Basurin said Ukrainian troops might have used shells of the caliber used by NATO forces. "Craters fit well to the caliber of NATO shells. However additional analysis is needed to be sure," he said.
