NEW YORK, March 18. /TASS/. The United States and Cuba have opened direct regular air service to connect New York with Havana. The American Cuba Travel Service company was the first to organize the exchange of charter flights on Tuesday, a representative of the Cuba Travel Service told TASS, adding that the air service began with a full passenger load.
Nevertheless, US citizens are still banned from visiting Cuba for purposes of tourism, but visits to meet relatives, attend events connected with the work of the government, religion, education and journalism are permissible. Besides, direct air service exists to connect Cuba with Florida.
Last December President Barack Obama admitted after a series of contacts, held between the United States and Cuba behind closed doors, that the former US politics in respect to Havana no longer works. Obama proclaimed a course towards normalization of bilateral relations and softening a regime of sanctions against Cuba.
