Cambodia-flagged cargo ship in distress in Sea of Japan

The effort to save the vessel with 14 crew members on board is carried out by the South Korean services

TOKYO/VLADIVOSTOK, March 11. /TASS/. A cargo vessel flying the Cambodian flag, en route from the Russian port city Nakhodka to South Korea’s Pohang, has sent a distress signal in the Sea of Japan, Japan’s Coast Guard said on Wednesday.

The vessel, with 14 crew members on board, most of them Chinese nationals, listed and started sinking. The ship is currently some 280 kilometers (174 miles) off the coast of the central Japanese Ishikawa prefecture.

Russia’s rescue and coordination center in Vladivostok, in the Far East, said the effort to save the vessel is carried out by the South Korean services.

"This is a foreign vessel, and indeed it traveled from Nakhodka," a spokesman for the Vladivostok-based center told TASS.

Patrol boats and aircraft of the Coast Guard have been sent to the scene.
