Minsk welcomes US decision to lift sanctions against Belarusian oil firm

The decision corresponds to a new trend in relations between Belarus and the United States

MINSK, 10 March. /TASS/. A decision by the US State Department to remove sanctions against Belorusneft, a state-owned Belarusian energy company, imposed in 2011 for its involvement in Iran’s oil industry, corresponds to a new trend in relations between Belarus and the United States, Belarusian Foreign Ministry spokesman Dmitry Mironchik said on Tuesday.

"The US State Department’s decision to lift sanctions against Belorusneft is a step in the right direction," Mironchik said, noting that the company for a long time stayed away from Iran’s oil projects which contravened the Iran Sanctions Act imposing economic sanctions on firms that make investments in Iran.

"The US decision also corresponds to the new atmosphere in the Belarus-US relations being created by mutual efforts of the sides," he added.
