West ignoring threats of US missile shield in Europe — Russian lawmaker

The lawmaker said the Western partners have failed to hear Russia’s calls and even refused to consider the ways to improve common institutions aimed at ensuring security

YALTA, February 5. /TASS/. Western politicians have turned a blind eye to the threats of creating a US missile shield in Europe, while ignoring Russia’s initiatives on ensuring security on the continent, Russia’s lower house speaker Sergey Naryshkin said on Thursday.

"Russia had called for the need to renew the system of global security, including on the European space, long before the Ukrainian crisis began," the State Duma chairman told a plenary session of an international conference in Crimea.

The conference, called Yalta-45: Past, Present, Future, is held in Crimea’s resort city of Yalta and is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the landmark meeting of the Allied powers of the anti-Hitler coalition - the Soviet Union, the United States and the United Kingdom.

"It seems that only a blind person would ignore the threats of creating a US missile defense system in Europe, NATO enlargement and a whole range of military interventions of the US bypassing the UN Security Council," Naryshkin said.

The lawmaker said the Western partners have failed to hear Russia’s calls and even refused to consider the ways to improve common institutions aimed at ensuring security.

According to Naryshkin, this has paved the way for Maidan protests in Ukraine which brought to power "radical forces that are now undermining from inside one of the largest countries on the European continent," Naryshkin said.
