Palestine may move in draft resolution for Israel occupation end in UN SC again

On Tuesday, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution planning terms for establishing a Palestinian state and the end to Israeli occupation

CAIRO, January 3. /TASS/. Palestinian authorities are pondering over bringing back in the UN Security Council a draft resolution for the end to Israeli occupation and creation of their state, the Palestine news agency WAFA cited Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh as saying on Friday.

On Tuesday, the UN Security Council rejected a draft resolution planning terms for establishing a Palestinian state and the end to Israeli occupation. The document did not gain a required majority of nine from 15 UN Security Council member states voting in favour of it. Meanwhile, the United States, which enjoys the veto right, voted against it. Eight countries, including Russia, China and Jordan backed the draft resolution. Australia also voted against the act. Other five states, including Britain, Lithuania, Nigeria, South Korea and Ruanda abstained.

Earlier on Friday, President Abbas instructed Foreign Minister Riyad al-Maliki, Palestinian ambassadors and permanent representatives in the Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC), the African Union and those countries which abstained or voted against the draft act to clarify reasons behind such decisions with their leadership, WAFA reported.

Meanwhile, chief Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat is to have meetings with ambassadors from the U.S., Britain and Australia to this end.

Palestinian leadership “keeps taking effort at political and diplomatic levels to attain a UN Security Council’s adoption of a resolution which lays down principles and basic clauses which will lead to the end to occupation, fair and well-coordinated settlement of the problem of refugees under UN Security Council Resolution 194 and the Arab peace initiative as well as the establishment of a sovereign and independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with the capital in East Jerusalem which would live in peace and security near Israel and other regional countries,” Abbas’ presidential administration said.
