BOGOTA, December 4. /TASS/. Russia and the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR) have major potential for partnership, Russian Ambassador in Ecuador Yan Burlyay told TASS on Thursday ahead of an UNASUR summit which will be held in Ecuador’s capital Quito and Guayaquil.

“UNASUR and Russia are primarily serious partners in promoting sovereign interests of different nations on the international scene,” Burlyay noted, adding that “I am convinced that there are real spheres of practical cooperation and partnership in concrete development projects of South American countries where Russia’s experience is difficult to overestimate.”

“Russia already has examples of mutually beneficial bilateral cooperation with Brazil, Venezuela, Argentina and Ecuador, but there is nothing like that regarding regional projects,” the ambassador recalled. “Our country can participate in such initiatives as construction of railways and creation of energy generating capacities,” the ambassador added.

“For Russia UNASUR is interesting for such major regional projects where our engineers, technicians would be able to work with their experience and our machines and equipment would be used,” Burlyay said, adding that “Meanwhile, for UNASUR Russia is interesting in view of diversification of partners.”

“This is an open secret that South American states were mainly oriented at Western countries in economic cooperation for many decades,” the diplomat said, noting that “Now this is quite useful for them to have this alternative in Russian companies, such as (major domestic railway operator) Russian Railways (RZD), (energy giant) Gazprom and (oil giant) Rosneft.”
