Ukraine’s president calls for political settlement in east, pro-European parliament

KIEV, October 25. /TASS/. A crisis in Ukraine’s east “can be resolved only by a political settlement”, the country’s president said in a televised address in the run-up to the parliamentary elections scheduled for Sunday.

Poroshenko said that “there is no military solution to the conflict” and vowed to “achieve settlement in the country’s east no matter how difficult it could be.”

Ukraine’s president said that his administration “has drafted a law on a coalition agreement” in the new parliament. The new composition of the Verkhovna Rada “should advocate reforms and to become pro-European.”

The Strategy-2020 programme initiated by Poroshenko is expected to become a basis for parliamentary coalition’s activity. Its implementation “will ensure a rightful place in the world for Ukraine” and will provide an opportunity to submit a bid for membership in the European Union by 2020, Poroshenko said.
